Daniel 2: Nebuchadnezzar's Dream by Larry Murray King Nebuchadnezzar had a puzzling dream that no one could explainuntil God gave the interpretation to Daniel. 3 And four great beasts were coming up from the sea, different from one another. When mentioning the little horn that grew up and uprooted three of the first ten horns, Daniel now tells us that this little horn grew until it was larger in appearance then the remaining seven horns. 1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel saw a dream and visions in his mind as he lay on his bed; then he wrote the dream down and related the following summary of it. The next portion of the statue in Daniel 2 was the chest and arms of silver which represented the Medo-Persian Empire which was even larger than the Babylonian empire. 10 If any one is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if any one kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Belshazzars rise to power and ascent to the throne seems to have inaugurated a new age for Babylon. (8) Is there any relationship between Nebuchadnezzars dream in chapter 2 and Daniels dream in chapter 7? Verse 2. God may choose to delay judgment on the wicked until their sin reaches full bloom; the possession of the land of Canaan would not happen in Abrahams lifetime, but more than 400 years later after the suffering of the people of God (see Genesis 15:12-17). (13) In some sense, the last kingdom is still on-going. We will deal with the meaning and application of Daniels vision later on in our questions and answers. The third portion of the statue in Daniel 2 was the belly and thighs of bronze which represented the Greek empire. Daniel went at once and obtained royal permission for more time, so that he could tell the king what the dream meant. History has shown this to be true in the past, and prophecy assures us that it will be true in the future. The ten horns, Daniel is told, represent ten kings who will emerge out of the fourth kingdom. It seems safe to assume the interpreter was an angelic being; at least this is the case in chapter 8 (8:15-26). We should note Daniels distress in chapter 7 before turning to the other prophecies in Daniel, where we will find that prophecy very often produces distress. That was bad enough, from the religious leaders perspective, but the way in which He answered them was the last straw. (19-26) Daniel explains the rise and coming fall of Nebuchadnezzar. In more detail, the outline would be as follows: (2) The Divine Interpretation verses 15-28. a. 11 And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon. In the Gospels, Jesus began not only to identify Himself as the Messiah, the promised Son of Man, but also to explain all that this involved. All distinctions of race and colour and nationality are stripped away and one apparently human figure represents the whole human race. Joyce C. Baldwin, Daniel: An Introduction and Commentary (Downers Grove: Inter-Varsity Press, 1978), p. 150. The words of verse 1 point to the relationship between the prophecy Daniel received and its historical setting and context. Thus, the vision is yet unfulfilled in terms of its major emphasis. Daniel explains that each of these metals represents a kingdom that would rule the world, and the stone is God . How interesting! Some people have a rather irreverent attitude toward prophecy, they approach it as a pastime and they delight in figuring out complex date schemes and drawing detailed diagrams of the future. God is in no hurry to fulfill His promises, whether His promise of the eternal kingdom for all the saints or the promise of eternal destruction and judgment for sinners. He staying the decree is brought to the king. Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. His disciples were promised that they would share in His reign as King (19:20). 7 And it was given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them; and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. During times of oppression, it may appear the saints are being defeated and that Gods kingdom is but wishful thinking. Salvation is likewise a process involving sufferingand then glory. Since the head of gold seems to describe the same king and kingdom as the first beast, it may not be too far afield to conclude that Nebuchadnezzar is the king represented by the first beast. We know from history that though Persia rose later than Media it soon overshadowed Media in its power. In his vision, the statue collapsed and disappeared, because a mysterious stone struck it at its feet. Ed, Issue 46, Winter 2023. There seems to be a close connection between the vision of Nebuchadnezzar, which is revealed and interpreted in chapter 2, and the vision of Daniel in chapter 7. (5) Prophecy is not written as hype but revealed to produce the hope of glory and endurance in present tribulation. God has revealed in this interpretation what He wants us to know and has kept back that which we need not know. A number of lessons from our text have broad application to our thinking and conduct as Christians. Who are these saints that the angel is speaking of? 25 And he will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. The prophecy of Daniel 11 includes amazing details about great empires, political developments and end-time powers that would affect the Jews and all people today. Would this horn Daniels vision revealed oppose the people of God and even blaspheme God Himself? Daniels first inner turmoil occurs in chapter 7. The saints must believe and behave according to what God has promised about the future the righteous will possess the kingdom of God forever. It is at this time that all human kingdoms will become subject to God and to the saints in the eternal kingdom, which the Son of Man will establish when He comes to the earth to judge and to rule. What so upset Daniel about the future? For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Peter 3:8-9, But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The second is Daniel's dream. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven. The fulfillment of the prophecy of Belshazzars demise underscores the certainty of the fulfillment of Daniels vision in the last days. (7) Prophecy is revealed, not to give us the particulars of things to come, but to change our perspective. Some of his alarm arose from his not yet having been given the interpretation of his vision. The emphasis is positive. (6) Prophecy is written to sober the saints. Gods plan and program are carried out on His schedule, not ours (see 2 Peter 2:8-10). Quite clear, however, is the identity of the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man.. The second is bear-like. 8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, every one whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. (4) This is the first prophecy in the book revealed directly to Daniel. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, [6]New American Standard Bible : 1995 Update. Daniel 2 (the second chapter of the Book of Daniel) tells how Daniel related and interpreted a dream of Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon. In his night dream, the king saw a gigantic statue made of four metals, from its head of gold to its feet of mingled iron and clay; as he watched, a stone "not cut by human hands" destroyed the statue and became a mountain filling the whole world. So, I began the review by looking at the first 14 verses where Daniel gives us a summary of the visions he had as he dreamed in his sleep. As we shall show later, the content of the prophecy of Daniel 7 is very closely related to the reign of Belshazzar. The statue has four parts; there are four beasts. 15 And there was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast might even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed (Revelation 13:4, 11-15). 1:17) that Daniel had understanding in dreams; and here we have an early and eminent instance of it, which soon made him famous in the court of Babylon, as Joseph by the same means came to be so in the court of Egypt. Two major divisions comprise our text: (1) Daniels dreamverses 1-14 and (2) the interpretationverses 15-28. The second and third beasts are briefly described in verses 5 and 6. Upon hearing the details of the dream, Daniel too was troubled (4:19). I approached one of those who were standing by and began asking him the exact meaning of all this. Does this dream have any significance for us? In chapter 5, King Belshazzars dream should have greatly alarmed him, but apparantly it did not. This fourth beast has the distinction of ten horns. Verse 17. The fourth beast appears to differ from the other three in that he is more beastly, more powerful, more destructive, and more arrogant. Just so, Christs suffering and glory is but a part of one coming. (4) Suffering is to be expected by the saints, before they enter into the glorious kingdom of God. At-A-Glance 1. (5) While the process involves wicked kings and nations and the suffering of the saints, the culmination is the establishment of Gods eternal kingdom. No wonder His words stung and prompted them to act as they did. I encourage you to compare the statements of Daniel 2:21-22, 44, 47; 4:3, 34-35, 37; 6:26 with the content and declarations of Daniel 7. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me. Daniel 1:1-2:4a was written in Hebrew. 12 and he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. 3 While they are saying, Peace and safety! then destruction will come upon them suddenly like birth pangs upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. Many Old Testament prophets shared Daniels distress as a result of the prophecies they received and often conveyed to others.74 Why does the prophecy of Daniel 7 cause this godly man so much consternation? The implication here is that this is a repeated dream, one that is . Prophecy greatly benefits the Christian because it enables him to see things from the bigger and broader perspectivefrom Gods perspectiveso that when he suffers, he knows it is but a part of the process of getting to glory. Rose withdraws the power from her chest, which takes the form of a ruby heart that then cracks as Unity dies peacefully in her sleep. Daniels vision ends here, but its impact on him does not end. If you remember as I have already stated, much of the interpretation of this dream could be found in chapter 2. Hosted by Michael Barbaro and Sabrina . Did Daniel interpret dreams? Before the Israelites were delivered out of Egypt and brought into the land of Canaan, they suffered at the hands of the Egyptians. As Daniel watches, "four great beasts," each different from the others, emerge from the dark waters (verse 3). What God declares in prophecy, He reveals as well in history. Different from the first three, this beast seems uglier, more powerful, and much more hostile toward God and His saints. In Daniels dream the Roman empire was represented by such a terrible beast that Daniel could name no animal which fit its description. 2 And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. Encouraged to do so, it savagely devours. It is virtually the opposite of the term beast. The expression, Son of man, is not new to Daniel. (5) What do the four beasts represent? Consequently, it is little wonder that in the events recorded in Daniel 5, Belshazzar was ignorant of Daniel and the abilities God had given him. Where it has not caused distress, it should have. Da Dn). In chapter 2 we read that Nebuchadnezzar was troubled and terrified by his dream, we read here in verse 15 that Daniel was distressed in his spirit because he knew that God had just shown him a panorama of tremendous events yet future and Daniels distress was his lack of understanding his dream. Desiring a more detailed explanation, he apparently asked for one and received it. Suffering is an inseparable part of the process which leads to glory. And the whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast; 4 and they worshiped the dragon, because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him? 5 And there was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies; and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him. He not only speaks against the Most High, he oppresses the saints. We could never predict the goals God has determined, nor the means He has ordained for history to reach them. Through the vision of a magnificent, awe-inspiring statue, God reveals the future for Gentile kings and their kingdoms. That night his life and his kingdom came to an end. 18 But the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come. 19 Then I desired to know the exact meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its claws of bronze, and which devoured, crushed, and trampled down the remainder with its feet, 20 and the meaning of the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up, and before which three of them fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth uttering great boasts, and which was larger in appearance than its associates. Jesus applied this text to them, not as those who would enter into His kingdom, but as those who would be judged at His return. I also told you it corresponded to the dream of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel chapter 2, but with more detail. 27 Then the sovereignty, the dominion, and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him. 28 At this point the revelation ended. As Daniel continues to watch, someone descends with the clouds of heaven, one like a Son of Man. He is presented to the Ancient of Days, and to Him is given dominion, glory, and the eternal kingdom. What God says, He will do. 77 According to Baldwin, This verse [13] has been the subject of more scholarly papers than any other in the book, so indicating its centrality, not only for Daniel but for the New Testament also. The Son of Man had the power to forgive sins, as well as to heal a paralytic (Matthew 9:6). Rather than publish what he had learned he kept it to himself, until that time that the Holy Spirit guided him to write down and reveal what he had learned to the saints. He could not figure out what the dream meant, so he wanted his advisors to explain it to him. Having gained an appreciation for Daniel and his three Hebrew friends, over a period he came to faith in their God. The final words of verse 25 are carefully chosen to let the reader know that while this king appears to be successfully opposing God, all he does is a part of the divine plan for the last days. We are in harmony with God when our declarations conform to his. The timeline reads as follows: The wicked will prosper and appear to get away with their opposition toward God and His saints. The message of this prophecy is really quite simple and may be summed up this way. 8 While I was contemplating the horns, behold, another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were pulled out by the roots before it; and behold, this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth uttering great boasts. The process of having a baby involves the pains of childbirth. He intends to make changes in time and in law. Subsequent revelations in the Book of Daniel which Daniel received were closely associated with some kind of agony or distress (see 8:17, 27; 9:20-21; 10:2-3, 7-10, 17; 12:8). God is able to raise up kings and put them down. The emphasis of this brief interpretation falls not on the enemies of God, their power, their brutality, nor their boasting, but on the kingdom of God, its certainty and its permanence for all the saints forever. So King Nebuchadnezzar honored God's men. 1. In the context of the coming of His kingdom and the suffering and trials which precede it, soberness is a vitally important quality which prophecy promotes: 1 Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. Before long, Daniel was explaining the dreams of King Nebuchadnezzar. They acknowledging their inability are judged to die. We have already seen time frame in Revelation referring to half of the seven-year tribulation. While God tells neither Daniel nor us that this beast represents Nebuchadnezzar, He does reveal that the head of gold in the vision of the great statue was Nebuchadnezzar (2:36-38). The saints (believing Jews when Christ return to earth) will enjoy the kingdom, the fulfillment of Gods promise to Israel.[3] The Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary states that these saints might also include the resurrected Old Testament saints, the martyred tribulation saints, and the tribulation saints who survive the tribulation. The wrenching off of the wings and the transformation of the lion, making him stand on two legs and giving him the mind of a man was a picture of God humbling Nebuchadnezzar and then restoring him to his right mind, you can read about this in Daniel 4. It was said ( ch. The first time in Daniel 7:13, he is referring to Messiah, who will sit on the eternal throne of His father, David. 17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. Public sentiment was turning against this foreign religion, and the Babylonians, including Belshazzar, wanted a return to their old time religion the pagan worship of the gods of Babylon. And they did! Peter reminds us of Gods patience, but His patience has a determined end. I kept looking, and that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them until the Ancient of Days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom. These kingdoms go from bad to worse. Yet Gods covenant to David (2 Samuel 7:16; Psalm 89:14) stands and will ultimately be fulfilled. The saints should neither believe nor behave on the basis of how things appear to be (the wicked prospering and prevailing over the righteous). These both represent Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian empire. Both series of four kingdoms begin well and end badly. But here in chapter 7, as in Psalm 80:17, the son of man is more than just a man, He is the Messiah. In Ezekiel, and even in Daniel (8:17), it is used in reference to a prophet. How easily we turn from what is revealed to speculate about what has been concealed (see Deuteronomy 29:29). From Daniel 2:4b to the end of chapter 7, the original text was written in Aramaic (the language of Babylon in that day). This was when his life took a sharp turn. If not, he could never have become airborne again. The last kingdom has at least eleven kings. They surely knew this text to be messianic, but they had always applied it to the Gentiles. Those of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar, and Darius all agree with the prophecy of Daniel 7. The latter prophecy of Daniel 7 adds many more details than were revealed in chapter 2. The beasts are a horrifying and frightening sight; the heavenly court scene is one of regal splendor and beauty. Consider these lessons as we conclude. He would rise from the dead (12:40). And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. The angels went on to add that the saints of the Highest One will be given into Antichrists hand for a time, times, and half a time. Wherever I see the Scriptures speak of the coming kingdom of God, I find suffering closely associated with it. Introduction to Daniel 11 Let us listen then, and be sober, enduring the sufferings and trials sent our way, looking expectantly and certainly for His kingdom to come. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts were greatly alarming me and my face grew pale, but I kept the matter to myself (verse 28). Prophecy becomes necessary from time to time to remind men of those things God has planned for the future which He will surely fulfill. Considering this text has changed my opinion about the gap in the prophecies of the Old Testament. I did not include the insert today because I have already included it several times.
