Here is where the denial starts. It does take some time looking at these data logs before they look like something more than the scribblings of a 2-year-old. Pressure holds steady at approximately 50 psig when engine is off. There should be no relay added to this wire. Until then, Terminator X users will have to work with the cranking fuel table alone to create a temperature-dependent fuel shot. O2 Sensor Mounting: The O2 needs to be mounted 6-8 after the merge in the header collector. Does pressing the throttle slightly allow the engine to start. What do I need to do to rectify this issue? So here's how I'd do it:Pin 86: To your ignition switch (12 volts) One option: You can add a hall effect crank trigger to your engine and set it up so that you're getting one pulse-per-fire at even intervals. (Ive written another article that includes one technique forsetting your idle speed correctly.) My problem is that it starts and stalls instantly then acts flooded. I always recommend fixing one thing at a time. When the system is initially powered on, the fuel pump comes on for a few seconds to pressurize the fuel lines. Regardless, this screw will eventually need to be adjusted. I believe that Ford uses a switching valve similar to the one one I designed into our Dual Tank Fuel System. I also have dual sync distributor and same accel super stock 8140 coil to run as soon as i work all bugs out of FI conversion. Holley Sniper EFI--Look, No ECU or Wiring Harness! First, it is fake news that EFI doesn't like big cams. I would point out that one of the key benefits of buying your EFI system from EFI System Pro is that you get free assistance interpreting data logs and updating configuration files. Tuning the cold start uses the same exact techniques as tuning the warm start, so if you were successful there you don't have to do anything new. Direct to the battery means to the battery. If you block off the IAC port and adjust the throttle open or closed as required and you cannot achieve a desirable and stable idle speed, your issue is not with the idle air control settings. A throttle linkage extender and a progressive linkage kit. Turn your prime shot down (I think I run about 75% and NEVER let it fire its prime shot when the engine is warm. Free ground shipping regardless of order size! HP ECU's. Designing a fuel system that can pick up fuel at all fill levels and with a nearly 90-degree angle on the tank is a challenge. Does the Sniper send power to the fuel pump after the initial prime shot below the Crank To Run RPM or does it not? Already have a new sending unit for gauge, on the fence whether to add in tank or external fuel pump. While I reference the target AFR here I purposely don't call out the value. Can I lower it for this purpose? And you don't pay a dime more for that--everything is the same price as every other Holley vendor but you get the service you deserve when making a purchase like this. Holley's Dominator and EFI doesn't have feelings--it doesn't care what cam you use. "I've edited the article with a note about the difference. Read the instructions and Follow them. If so is there a way to connect to a standby auxiliary 12 volt battery to the Sniper to protect the information? Many thanks,Louis. Have you ever watched a post nuclear apocalypse movie? If you're getting in the 10's your asking for issues. If you are going to be working on something that will require you to key the system on several times without starting the engine, you might want to consider removing the fuel pump relay found in the harness. Quick to respond and very knowledgeable. I have the 12-1800 dual holley pump also. 4.) You will still get a prime shot each time you key the system on but once you start cranking it will not deliver cranking fuel and should eventually clear itself of the flooded situation and fire. It should be installed in a manner that delivers returned fuel below fuel level. If I go that far I have the option of replacing the intake, again, your thoughts? Engines require three things to run. and set 3.) This circuit shuts off during crank and will obviously cause problems. Confession: My TPS is split and works well. features . Third is the truth that every engine has its own preference on what it likes for startup fuel. The Ordering process was so easy and non-painful. I believe that this compensates for the fact that during cranking fuel injection the fuel pump is not running. Bolt-on carburetor style EFI for your classic car or truck. Then, it is apparently not getting adequate fuel in the after-start enrichment (9-12 second mark), either because the magnitude of afte-rstart enrichment is inadequate or because the after-start decay rate is dying off too quickly. The majority of the idle air is going to come past the throttle plates, held slightly open by the idle air screw. Capability Range: Professional I kind of doubt there is anything truly scientific about 6-8 inches but rather a number that is probably safe for all headers. The xflow instructions state it needs 60 psi. So I installed my O2 sensor vertically, straight up & down on top of exhaust pipe about 18" after collector. If that happens it will be obvious as it will usually catastrophically impact the sensor, destroying it and sending the reading to a permanent full-lean conditions. The car is 31 years old with only 13 500 miles on it. Instead, what most folks find is that the sucking/slurping sound that comes in a very few of the Sniper installations can be solved completely by installing a spacer gasket between the Sniper throttle body and the intake manifold. Enjoy! Can you post a photo of the wiring on the ignition switch? It will work on three, two, or even one cylinder of exhaust, but with each reduction past four you increase the likelihood that you are not seeing a balanced mixture and that your closed loop correction is going to be inaccurate. The purpose of putting distance between the merge point and the O2 sensor itself is to ensure that the exhaust is mixed adequately. Figure out what it's not getting and the find out why. Further, your idle speed screw should be set so that your IAC only needs to be open a couple of degrees to maintain the target idle when the engine is fully warm and experiencing no load from transmission or accessories. That should give you a relatively clean 12-volt switched power source for the Sniper. Is this normal? If that works then try halving them again. Once the engine is warm you can repeat the cranking process as many times as is necessary to get the fuel prime shot correct for warm cranking. Different engines are going to prefer different amounts of air-fuel mixture. The Del City Time Delay Relay is pinned just like a normal relay. Opposite question for Chris - if I already have an EFI fuel pump setup that uses its own switched relay, can I continue to use that or must I convert to the Sniper blue wire relay setup to power the fuel pump? I have a datalog. These settings will be instrumental to a fast start. 6-8" would require me to install in my headers. You also need to properly phase the rotor. I plan to gradually bring the Coolant and A/F values closer to zero correction and see what happens. Is the fuel pressure correct? Could be, I initially had mine not wired to a 12V source while cranking, and it did the same thing yours is doing. (If the Sniper does not get a RPM signal, it will not inject fuel.). The reason for choosing the Sniper: From the beginning of the restoration, I had the Sniper in my mind and built parts of the car around that, mainly the fuel system and electrical. Unfortunately, the only way to do this is with the Sniper Software. classic car or truck *Possible delays due to Covid-19 click for more information. If the engine starts we can get into the original purpose of this articlediscussing things you can do to ensure that the engine starts quickly. Now were getting there. Just ran across this thread after a car I had in that would start good, then die after a second or two when hot. Connect the crank and run wires together and all should be good. Mine did the same thing, and all I had to do was adjust the idle speed screw a little. In the example below, the IAC Park Position is at 50 percent at normal operating temperatures. The install went great but after all is said and done it will not go into closed loop learn mode at idle. i.e., 5x at -40 and 0 at 160. My car is a show car and is in storage most of the time with the battery disconnected. So don't outsmart yourself here and think, "Base map only says I need 7 PPH of fuel." This is the crank-to-run RPM. I know it's only 2 feet but ever inch counts. I am in the middle of plumbing my new sniper throttle body system. But you can extend the leads using wires of an equal or heavier gauge. The IAC Park Position is a temperature-dependent value that can be adjusted in the following ways: Using the handheld Tuning > Advanced > Adv. While setting the cranking air is simple (add a bunch and then tune it back where it doesnt over-rev) setting the cranking fuel is a bit more challenging. Most current pump fuels boil around 130 degrees. Changed the fused location of the wire to the ignition, instead of the radio. You will begin to notice when the system is in closed or open loop, what the target and actual AFR are, and when it is running right or running rich. Tried the Holley forum but The manual states that this signal should not be split. Price Point: $$, Robust, feature-rich multi-port EFI systems offer easy plug-and-play late-model V8 engine swaps. Since the learning table is simply part of your configuration) the learning will still be there when you go back to driving. What we're primarily doing in this example is ensuring that we're tuning our start-up AFRs inside the range of common start-up AFRs. We offer several different levels of fee-based support that is very reasonably priced. Lets try 75% on the fuel prime. Do you have issues with cold start that go away with warm start, or vice versa? Tune the cranking fuel in the following locations: Using the Handheld Tuning > Advanced > Advanced Fuel > Cranking Fuel, Using the Software Fuel ICF (Fuel Injector Icon) > Startup Enrichment > Cranking Fuel. Run the switched 12-volt back as close to the ignition as possible. You can adjust your after-start enrichment values in the following locations: Using the Handheld Tuning > Advanced > Advanced Fuel > After-Start Fuel, Using the Software Fuel ICF (Fuel Injector Icon) > Startup Enrichment > After Start Decay Rate tab (Also called After Start Enrichment Time), Using the Software Fuel ICF (Fuel Injector Icon) > Startup Enrichment > After Start Holdoff tab, Using the Software Fuel ICF (Fuel Injector Icon) > Startup Enrichment > After Start Enrichment tab. I'm glad this approach worked for you. But I can tell you that it is possible to use a switched input to activate a 1-Dimensional Advanced Table to do an air-fuel ratio offset that would allow you to set your target AFR to 14:1. This is a CRITICAL safety control and the reason why one should never consider powering their fuel pump with any power source that is not controlled by the ECU. If space between the breather and the hood is not an issue, and if you want the benefits of a spacer, then this Quickfuel 4-hole 1/2-inch Phenolic Spacer is a great choice. Not perfect but not bad. Hard starting cool but starts easy when hot. O2 Sensor Mounting: The O2 needs to be mounted 6-8 after the merge in the header collector.Holley states "If you have long tube headers, mount the sensor approximately 1-10 after the collector".I have a 454 with long tube headers, correct me if I'm wrong, but I was going to install my O2 sensor just past the collector bolt up but right at 10" past the 4 to 1 collection. Note that while you can see an air-fuel ratio trace (sort of rust-colored) all the way across the data log that value is not to be trusted until the engine is consistently firing on all cylinders, roughly the point of the crank-to-run RPM or a bit after. Is the sniper compatible with my distributor? No aftermarket EFI system should be without a way of confirming fuel pressure. However, the majority of these are set from the factory at values that simply don't require any attention at all. You need to run resistor plugs and resistor, non-solid core wires. Looking at the 4500 sniper and I run Super Street 10.90. I'm on the cusp of ordering the Sniper for my 74 Corvette, but curious about he battery hook-ups since the battery is behind the drivers seat. One thing I miss is the instant drop in rpms that my 650DP had. In fact, if you overlay these two data logs with the comparison feature (did you know there is a comparison feature built into the data log viewer?) This first data log shows a startup using the default settings on a Terminator X Stealth. Starts & immediately dies. A key at the top of each log shows the signals associated with each color. And 10 micron filter between the pump and throttle body. Full product line and accessories at excellent pricing. Why? to the same number as 4.) All seemed well with the setup and going through the handheld. Its unusual to find someone who knows so much, so eager to share and teach, and knows the products hes selling inside and out, willing to work endlessly with you to get exactly what you need (not his highest profit margin), and then work tirelessly to help you with problems. Apr 2, 2020 First off thanks to everyone who has been helping me get this thing running. Can I get clarity please? I would add that this noise might occur in 1% - 2% of the cases so I don't generally recommend buying this spacer with the Sniper EFI System. Does it matter if O2 sensor goes in drivers side with true duals? Thanks for spending your time helping us weekend mechanics. Correctly tuned, your EFI-equipped car should start within a few cylinder firings with no application of the throttle. Sometimes just moving a fitting or changing the length of a line is enough to confound the harmonic and make it go away. Much appreciated! 4.56 rear gear and total weight is 2825 with me. Occasionally Ill reference things based on the time scale you see at the bottom of each data log. Capability Range: Advanced One thing didn't make sense to me. Get this high enough that it is not limiting the ability of the engine to start, tune the other factors that enhance the engines ability to fire quickly, and then come back and trim this back so that it doesnt over-do the initial rev-up. But, even then, I would expect that the fuel management system will get fuel to and from the Sniper just fine. I can't find a good spot in the fuse block, I don't recommend this. EMI is what wipes out all the electronics. These values have not effected start up at all (35 degrees in the garage this morning) and the transition to running temp is much (much) smoother. It is also coming through the idle air port. Find a lower price anywhere and we'll beat it by 5%! Copyright 2017 Cyberspace Automotive Performance, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Best Overall. I need to get an answer to the question concerning the TPS. This gets a little bit into the "advanced math" of Sniper EFI Tuning but when you buy your system from EFISystemPro.Com you can give me a call and I'll gladly walk you through this. The Sniper ships with an OEM grade Bosch O2 sensor. Not some generic piece as some have speculated. Is one barrel not spraying at all? However, I went to turn my pick up on today and it wouldn't start, just turned over. Don't change the prime shot percentage though. Great job implementing what I've written! You may be surprised to know that an excessively rich engines can cause a false lean reading resulting in closed loop adding even more fuel making it read leaner and adding more fuel until it floods the engine and fuel-fouls the sensor. Nice catch, Ken! Get a gauge. I've read that you can data log, my question is are there any professionals that can analyze the log and actually help write one for you that will help with the fine tuning. Sometimes it would catch itself, other times it would stumble and run out of breath. There must be an option that has been found to work. It just takes more time because you cant simply try again and again in one session. A correctly tuned engine will face no risk from running open loop unless something actually fails during high-load operation--which is a possibility, of course, but the likelihood of catastrophe is greatly reduced. If you turn the ignition off and back on, & crank it, it will start & die again. Chris is my go to for any issues that arise with my sniper. Getting the engine running was never a problem. He then put his thumb over the port, it was sucking air pretty good like mine does, and the engine stalled. https://www.msdperformance.com/suppos/#EngineRunOn, If this is your first visit, be sure to Cranking fuel lets us compensate for that drop in pressure. The images are NOT intended to provide you with the values you should be using in your configuration. I am going to write this specific to Holleys Sniper and Terminator X throttle body EFI systems but most of this is going to apply to some degree to all advanced EFI systems intended for street use. Bradley Iger. Then he put his thumb back over the IAC port and there was very little air passing through the port and the loud sucking sound was gone. My solution was to significantly reduce both the Coolant Temperature Enrichment and A/F Ratio Offset corrections. Good luck! The problem isn't the 55 PSI. Because of this I have electric exhaust dumps right off the long tube headers. How do you set this up?Thanks! Super helpful and knowledgeable. I figured it would be minimal. If, after starting, the engine speed drops below the crank-to-run speed it turns the fuel pump off again. This, in turn, will power the Sniper. The Coolant Temperature starts at 106% and decays to 100% at 160 degrees. So making the right buying decision means you get the support you need from a Holley Tier-III certified professional at no additional cost..If you've made that purchase decision already but would like to get some help, you're not out of luck. That means at or above 55 PSI it is capable of flowing ZERO fuel. Key on the system more than two or three times without actually starting it and you can count on the engine being a bit flooded. Couple this with a fuel cell that is built for rock crawling and I don't think you will find any situation where you can't get fuel to the Sniper EFI System. Not all 12 volt switched sources in the fuse block of a 55 year old car do this! Capability Range: Advanced I see folks debating this so let me say unequivocally that the Sniper WILL NOT WORK on an engine if the Sniper is trying to get its RPM signal from the ignition. Any suggestions? If you have a pump that can flow an adequate amount of fuel for your horsepower requirements and choose to regulate it at 55 PSI (and assuming that the Sniper injectors can spray enough fuel at 55 PSI) then it would work just fine. (Dont forget and then later wonder why it wont start!). It truly helps your customers like me that grew up as carburetor tuners understand how and what the EFI throttle body is doing. Hello, Hi, I have a 1987 Firebird with 305 engine and Quadrajet carb. Hello Chris. Awesome Article. Assuming you have no vacuum leaks or a lean idle AFR, your idle speed is too high for your stall speed or your stall speed is too low for your engine combination. Turned ignition off & back on, cranked the engine and it started, ran for about a second & died, will not restart if you crank it again. Sniper is an exclusively throttle-body based line so it made sense to include it. Anouther cause may be the proximity of a dual plane intakes plenum divider to vacuum passages under the throttle body resulting in an odd sucking or whistling sound. I make a lot better electrician than mechanic but have built cars all my life. It is likely that the main power and ground leads are not long enough. Air is not just coming into the engine via the throttle blades. Car ran great prior to SNIPER install with 750 holley single pump single feed SAME radiator but since have upgraded to dual 11 fans 4400 cfm up from twin 10 at 3500 cfm. Yes, I have fuel pressure. Price Point: $, Advanced throttle body injection systems capable of transmission control and more. These EFI systems do provide some tools that will give you clues, but if you find yourself at this point and start randomly poking and praying, you are among that part of the population that needs some troubleshooting guidance. This is a huge improvement over what we got initially. Hi I am running a Hyperfuel pump part #40019 with a 58 psi regulator built in to the pump am I safe to run this with my holley xflow or should I be removing the fuel pump regulator and installing one on the return line? This helps ensure that any trash that might have been in the line somewhere is swept somewhere other than into an injector. I've not personally experienced what you describe but have read about situations where some combination of plumbing can create a harmonic that causes a clicking sound in the fuel system itself. Bolt-On EFI for your It drains the battery almost dead then will fire up. You may have an injector connector that has come loose.A final note that I can't emphasize enough. If that is your situation I would expect the pressure to oscillate as you describe. Also check your cranking voltage if it starts hard. I really would like to replace the intake gaskets. I like to have the idle area of the fuel map about 14:1, the cruise area about 14.5:1 and the WOT area about 13:1. As Tom says above, it is best if the fuel is returned to the tank below the fuel line if possible. It seems to be going threw gas faster then it should. Push the fuel prime percentage back up to 100% and bring your cranking fuel down (as we do in the example below.). Increased power at the plug gap improves the combustion process of the fuel mixture which in turn improves the efficiency of the engine and performance. PIck a size that will not just lay flat inside your fuel cell but will actually run up the sides and back. Ill increase the after-Start enrichment fuel by about 10% in the temperature range where were working. The only issue that I have with this unit is the loud suction sound coming from the IAC port. Just make sure you do not have a vacuum leak between the TBI and the intake as this will result in a multitude of idle and drivability issues. My setup requires too much pedal pressure both starting and running. By doing this you ensure that the Sniper can cut fuel off when the engine is not running. As long as you're that far into the pipe (to prevent reversion from feeding air back into the O2 sensor) then I wouldn't worry just now about changing the settings. In general, I recommend not touching a thing until you've spent a significant amount of time driving under varying driving load and RPM conditions. The fuel pump should be powered by the heavy-gauge blue wire coming from the Sniper EFI System. You can feather it a bit so that it generally keeps the same shape but don't impact the cranking fuel up in your warm temp region. And the smell is just about gone. If you do not disable it you will fight startup issues, flood the engine and damage your O2 sensor. Would love some feedback as what I need to do to help my issue. At least not right away (after time-delay set in relay). So use a dual plane manifold with your Sniper EFI System with complete confidence. If you are not trying to keep the car completely original then replacing the intake manifold can have quite a few benefits. The Ordering process was so easy and non-painful. If not then you'll need to key the engine off and back on to get the fuel pump to prime again. Find a lower price anywhere and we'll beat it by 5%! Several things to cover here. superchargeddrt Well-Known Member Joined Aug 24, 2009 Messages 2,420 Reaction score 1,102 A coolant temperature enrichment factor will be applied if the engine is not up to operating temperature but a bit more fuel is normally beneficial as well. Don't be that guy. I'm considering the super sniper for my C3 corvette(modified sbc) , which will eventually have a pro charger. That's what the fuel prime is all about. I want to run an under the carb type throttle stop. Your advice would be appreciated. Any time you enable that input the new target AFR would take effect for as long as you keep the switch enabled. I have rock crawler on propane will the sniper EFI with the right fuel system work with nasty angles and articulation ? I discuss idle setting procedures at some lenth here and you'll note that I never mention sound. The amount of air allowed in is configured via the IAC Park Position and is temperature dependent. Thanks, Steve! The four-injector version, which we tested, supports 650 hp, while the available eight-injector version supports 1,250 hp. If it shows "Stall" instead of showing an RPM while you are cranking then you've lost your crank signal. How Sniper EFI Helped Get The Andersons' C10 Project Back On Track. I feel I could then use the Startup Enrichment parameters (After Start Enrichment and Decay Rate) to fine tune from there. If the fuel pressure is a little low don't worry about that. First, remember that after-Start enrichment is not a fixed value. Capability Range: Advanced Great article. my screen recording software i. Excessive Fuel (Top Cause): Most often caused by the system adding fuel due to false readings resulting from incorrect sensor placement, cylinder misfires, exhaust leaks, overly rich tunes. Avoid using any 90 degree fittings between the tank and pump. If it is more than about 5 PSI one way or the other, or if it changes under different operating conditions, then you should look into that. Super helpful and knowledgeable. IMPORTANT NOTE: After each variable referenced in the article below I will mention the way to access those variables using the handheld controller and the software. Gary. Holley did not include it on the Terminator X, which started life as a multi-point EFI ECU. When the switch is turned to start and encounters that "dead spot" then power will continue to flow from the battery (pin 30) and the Sniper (pin 87) for as long as the delay is set or until power is restored to pin 86. Then I will provide an image of how this variable looks in the software. Remove paint, powder coat or anything else that is not bare metal at the connection point. Happy New Year! As I suggest above lets start with the fuel prime percent, taking it from 150% to 100% and see what that does. Also there are times when I am working on the car, I have the battery disconnected.
